Pokupić, Pavlović, Gubajdullina: Metamorphosis
CD
About the release
It all began with a METAMORPHOSIS.
Not only with the song Verwandlung (Metamorphosis), which ultimately found itself at the centre of this release, but also with the “metamorphosis” of the anthological work by Dora Pejačević from its original for voice, violin, and piano into a version with clarinet. From that metamorphosis, this extraordinary ensemble was eventually born in which voice and clarinet united with piano representing three outstanding musicians.
The song by Dora Pejačević, “that quiet meditation”, was, as the musicians say, “the first spark, motive, and inspiration.” Within the symbolism of metamorphosis lay “the idea of movement, change, and inner growth, in other words, everything that inspires the trio itself.” Verwandlung thus carried within it the symbolism “of that constant flow which lies at the heart of our project.” From Verwandlung onward, the project continued to evolve as an exploration of original compositions (Bliss), of works that could in various ways be “transformed” (Bridge, Pejačević, Bjelinski), and even of the questions which contemporary author might write for such an ensemble (Skender). The transformed compositions thus remained “still the same, yet new, fresh, and different…” The process of creation of the programme was simultaneously a personal journey into what the musicians feel and strive to express through music, “a path of change, inner growth, and creative passage from one form into another.” At the same time it was an exciting process of exploring the ensemble’s possibilities, “everything that the relationships between the voice, clarinet, and piano can transform into.” For Renata, a particular creative challenge was “preparing Skender’s cycle – it includes spoken parts, which opened wider possibilities of expression through the voice.” For Marija, a major performance challenge was “to convey extreme dynamics on the clarinet while maintaining a subtle balance with the voice.” Julia built “shared sonic material,” creating “the connective tissue in which the vocal and clarinet lines intertwine and complement each other, shaping a fluid space of shared breathing.”
The final result confirms that metamorphosis in life, as in music, is always welcome. If it weren’t part of nature, the caterpillar would never become a butterfly. And if it weren’t part of music, we wouldn’t have this ensemble nor their debut album. (Borko Špoljarić, from CD book)
