About the release

The idea for this project has started on the international musicological scientific conference organized in 2014 in Zagreb, by the Croatian Musicological Society (HMD) and the Department of the History of Croatian Music of the Institute for the History of Croatian Literature, Theatre and Music of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU) under the title Ivan Zajc (1832-1914). Musical Migrations and Cultural Transfers in Central Europe and Beyond in the ‘Long’ 19th Century. Thanks to the broad concept of this scientific conference, which attempted to bring some other ideas from the previously known information about Ivan Zajc, about his work and events during his lifetime and after him, prominent musicologists, sociologists, media experts, composers and university professors have documented Ivan pl. Zajc as a composer, influential and beyond the national framework in which he has been mainly considered so far. Based on the quantity, type and quality of the material presented about Zajc and his sacred opus, it was proposed that in the future more attention be paid to the works of Ivan Zajc, on several levels: musicological research, publishing scores and inclusion in concert and theatre repertoires.

Since there is also a large number of Zajc’s works in the field of sacred music that can expand and supplement the sacred-concert, theatre and liturgical repertoire, prof. dr. sc. Katarina Koprek conceived and led the scientific research project Sacred Music of Ivan pl. Zajc and the Singing Society “Vijenac” – with collaborators Ines Fočić, prof. v. lec., and assoc. prof. art. Viktorija Čop (2017). The project was realized through musicological research, reading, transcribing the original material and publishing a book, i.e. sheet music of the Singing Society “Vijenac” and Ivan pl. Zajc. Compositions of Ivan pl. Zajc dedicated to the Choir “Vijenac”. In 2019, this project was continued by organizing the first contemporary performance of compositions by Ivan pl. Zajc dedicated to the Choir “Vijenac”, included in the published sheet music edition, as part of the artistic and research project of the Institute of Church Music of the Faculty of Arts, University of Zagreb, under the leadership of Assoc. Prof. Art. Viktorija Čop. In 2020, work on the project continued in the form of the production and publication of this sound carrier.
