Odrazi moderne / Reflections of the Moderna

Ligatura Series – HRT/HDS/Cantus
Croatian Radiotelevision Symphony Orchestra
Ivan Repušić, conductor

This album in the Ligatura series, created in collaboration between Croatian Radiotelevision and the Croatian Composers’ Society, brings together two major musical works that today hold cult status in Croatian musical heritage, representing the pinnacles of national orchestral music from the first half of the 20th century – Blagoje Bersa’s symphonic poem Sunčana polja and Dora Pejačević’s Symphony in F-sharp minor. This release presents an interpretation by the Croatian Radiotelevision Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Ivan Repušić, offering a new dimension to these brilliant works.

“Blagoje Bersa’s symphonic poem Sunčana polja and Dora Pejačević’s Symphony in F-sharp minor, Op. 41, the works found on this recording, today enjoy ‘star’ status in Croatian culture and are unquestionably recognized as masterpieces within the body of national music of the first half of the 20th century. Their current reception as supreme achievements of Croatian musical modernism in orchestral music, however, says nothing about the exciting circumstances of their creation and the complicated fate that befell them after being severed from the ‘umbilical cord’ of their creators, because works of art, just like people, have their own entirely special histories, destinies, and life paths.” (from the CD booklet text by Davor Merkaš)

Artistic collaborations
In the Ligatura series, we collaborate with contemporary visual artists whose works on the covers immediately introduce us to the poetics of the musical works. For the album Odrazi moderne, a reproduction of a painting by our renowned painter Lovro Artuković was selected.
