About the release
In the anthology of the Music Biennale Zagreb, the festival at which it was premiered, Dubravko Detoni describes Marko Ruždjak’s composition Ubu for mixed choir a cappella as “a free but thoughtful work, transformed and then placed among the molds of an extremely clear form”. The composer’s dedication to the human voice – a singing that resembles speech, speech on the verge of singing, creates a natural pulsation and sound color, occasionally sounding like the percussion instruments that we often find in Ruždjak’s works. Ubu was composed in 1985, and the Croatian Radio and Television Choir, conducted by Igor Kuljerić, premiered the composition on 4 April 1993 at the Croatian Music Institute, as part of the 17th MBZ. The work is included in the anthology of Croatian choral music, and in 1986 it earned the composer the Vladimir Nazor Award.
