About the release

Franjo Lučić’s organ opus falls broadly into two categories. The first comprises academically conceived works, often characterized by rigorous contrapuntal writing, including numerous fugues—sometimes independent, sometimes paired with a prelude—as well as related forms. Among these, the Toccata and Fugue in F major and the two-movement Sonata in C minor, both composed in 1909, are particularly notable. Each opens with a virtuosic and expansive movement, followed by an elaborate fugue.

In the central and later stages of his career, Lučić increasingly turned to freer, rhapsodic forms marked by a distinctive atmosphere and expressive character. Works such as the Legend in A minor (1910), clearly influenced by the late-Romantic idiom of German composers, and the highly successful Fantasy in C minor (1932) and Elegy in F minor (1935), belong to this period.

It is in these later works that Lučić’s most individual voice emerges. Here, he achieves a balance between discipline and freedom, combining measured contrapuntal craftsmanship with flowing, expressive melodies. For the first time in Croatian organ music, he incorporated elements drawn from indigenous Croatian musical traditions, particularly traditional melodies, clothing them in a richly Romantic language marked by broad crescendos and decrescendos alongside intimate lyrical passages. Often, a single concise melodic motif is sufficient to create a distinctive and evocative atmosphere.

It is therefore unsurprising that Lučić later orchestrated many of his organ works for symphony orchestra. More remarkable, however, was his treatment of the organ itself as a symphonic instrument—an approach that was highly unusual in the Croatian musical environment of the time. By all accounts, he achieved this with great success. It is especially regrettable that his Concerto for Organ and Symphony Orchestra in C minor—the first work of its kind in Croatian music—appears to be irretrievably lost.

The symphonic conception and sonority of Lučić’s organ music represent a significant departure from the work of the preceding generation of Croatian organ composers. They also help explain the enduring popularity of his organ works among both performers and audiences.
