Kunc left the rich traces of his compositional work in almost all musical fields and genres except opera (which is actually quite surprising, considering his studious work with his sister on rehearsing operatic roles). He wrote concertos (the first performer of his two wonderful violin concertos was the renowned Croatian violinist Zlatko Baloković, while the autograph of the second is preserved in the estate of the great violinist Nathan Milstein in New York), as well as a number of works for solo instruments, orchestral compositions, solo songs and chamber music, but he reached the pinnacle of his compositional work in the field of music for piano and music with piano accompaniment. …
Most musicologists who have examined Kunc’s musical oeuvre more closely agree that he reached the pinnacle of his compositional work in the field of piano miniatures. They are true masterpieces in which a sovereign pianistic technique is entirely at the service of the spirit, a microcosm of the subtlest tremors of the soul; at times they are small explosions of virtuosity, apotheoses of the rhythm of dance, of breathtaking passages and vigorous movement, while at other times they are refined tonal creations, intimate and intensely felt “confessions” of distinctive moods. (from the introductory text by Davor Merkaš)
The musical notes in the accompanying booklet were written by Davor Merkaš.
