Petar Bergamo: String Quartet
About the release
String Quartet / Quartetto d’archi is a youthful creation by Petar Bergamo, created in 1958, towards the end of his studies, following the classical-romantic tradition, but also a series of creations by leading composers of the first half of the 20th century, as a reflection of a kind of symbiosis of acquired experiences, personal reflections on the composition process and his own, already formed expression. Bergamo approached the challenge of constructing a composition of the traditional genre by relying on the established four-movement formal framework, systematically, but with openness to the new, placing emphasis on the clarity of content, luxurious color and dramatic contrapuntal threads of the work, skillfully building authentic separate parts of a logical whole.
The composer’s intention was to create a recognizable work for listeners that naturally blends the familiar and usual with the new and different. Partly relying on the work of composers of the first half of the 20th century, such as Richard Strauss, Bela Bartók, Dmitri Shostakovich and Sergei Prokofiev, Petar Bergamo also moves away from their aesthetics, building his own, somewhat contradictory – at the same time intense, frugal, unique, systematic and free, while finding ingenious solutions during the creative process itself. With an impressive and knowledgeable compositional approach and a characteristic, unique expression, he created a dramatically strong, expressive work that reconciles tradition and innovation, placing them in a relationship of harmonious coexistence.
