When, at the beginning of the 2023/2024 season, Matija Fortuna took over the position of artistic director and conductor of the Croatian Radiotelevision Tamburitza Orchestra, he set out to shape a repertoire and programme that would establish the tambura as an instrument of exceptional soloistic and orchestral possibilities, with an emphasis on the artistic quality of tambura music and on the professional, academically trained musicians who create it.
The selection of three Croatian composers for this first standalone discography release by the Croatian Radiotelevision Tamburitza Orchestra under Matija Fortuna’s direction is the result of such an orientation, but also of a practice established within the concert cycle In the Atmosphere of the Tambura – namely, the commissioning and premiere performance of new works. In this case, these are concertante works that unite original compositional voices with the tambura tradition into a new value of authentic Croatian instrumental creativity.
Artistic collaborations
In the Ligatura Series, we collaborate with contemporary visual artists and photographers whose works on the covers introduce us at first glance to the poetics of the musical works. For the cover of this album, the painting Listopad by Anita Celić Cella (2022) was selected.
The Ligatura Series was created in collaboration between Croatian Radiotelevision and the Croatian Composers’ Society.
