Marko Ruždjak: Classical Garden — for String Quartet
About the release
In Marko Ruždjak’s rich and diverse oeuvre, a special place belongs to chamber music and works for various performing ensembles. Thus, in 1976, one of the anthological achievements in the field of Croatian avantgarde chamber music was created, Classical Garden, for string quartet. It is a composition based on two structural types – more concise and more extensive, the former of which uses the whole-tone range, with the activity of all musicians from the string quartet, and the latter outlines a rhapsodic atmosphere and improvisational character. According to the composer, the composition resolves its elastic laternations of inhalation and exhalation, contraction and decontraction, in the affirmation and calm of the final chord. The work was premiered at the Glazbena tribina in Opatija (then the Panel of Yugoslav Musical Creativity) in 1977 by the Zagreb Quartet, whose performance was recorded on several discographic releases.
