Shortly after World War II, Kunc continued writing violin works of high quality dedicated to colleagues - as he did already in his op. 4, dedicated to colleague Ljerko Spiller - and to violinist friends: Kunc dedicated his Sonatina, op. 41 to pulmonologist Milan Žepić, Aspiration, op. 33 to Zlatko Baloković and later Rondo, op. 48 to Aleksandar Segedi. All of them were the students of the Zagreb Violin School founder, Vaclav Huml. Milan Žepić was an excellent amateur violinist and the concert master of the Croatian Music Institute Orchestra in Zagreb as well as its president. The composer probably performed his Sonatina with Žepić only privately. Kunc performed Aspiration with famous soloist Baloković also privately, which is evidenced by a recording in the posession of Professor Anđelko Krpan in Zagreb. His works are stylistically close to the classical form of European modernism, while never losing contact with the Croatian national folklore.
In the violin parts of all these works the dedicatees had marked their violinistic solutions that have been left out here. Having moved to the USA, where he was frequently playing with Baloković, Kunc arranged the piano accompaniment of Aspiration for large orchestra. It is a work of sombre nostalgia using expressive violin virtuosity masterly. The manuscripts of both Sonatina and Aspiration are in the library of the Croatian Music Institute in Zagreb, to which the editor is highly indebted for the copies given at his disposal. I am also indebted to my young friend, the thorough and patient copyist of this publication, Mladen Ergić.
While Aspiration is rather usual in its A-B-A (var.) form, in the two-movement Sonatina there is a novelty: the development section of the fast movement culminates in a brilliant violin cadenza, leading to the recapitulation. Both pieces can be considered as highlights of the Croatian violin literature, confirming the talent and mastery of the composer.
